With today’s available color choices it is also important to consider what you want the overall look or effect to be.

Want simple and classic?  You will want to pick a roofing color that will tie in or match the existing style of your home.  Consider all the elements of your home’s exterior including the color of your home, the doors, window panes, brick, siding, stone, trim, and even the landscape.  It is best to choose a roofing color to complement those existing colors.   Remember that this color will last for 30+ years. So you will want to be sure it is one that you will be happy with for years to come.

Choosing a roofing color

Do you really want your house to stand out?  Then you will want to choose a roofing color that will contrast with your siding or brick color.  Want a more classic look?  Choose a roofing color that compliments the overall color scheme of your home.

White, gray, yellow or blue homes pair well with gray and black roofs.

Have a red or yellow house?  You may want to consider black, brown or gray.

How about natural stone or siding?  You would want to choose brown or tan to tie into the existing look of your home.

Before you make a final decision, take a look at the sample at different times of the day.   The color will look different in full sun than it will during sunset.  The color will appear lighter in full sun and will appear darker at sunset.

 Color Effects

Not only can you use the color to enhance the overall appearance of your home.  Did you know that dark colors vs. light also has an impact on the appearance of your roof?  It does make a difference.

Lighter roof colors will help make your home appear taller.  Where darker colored roofs can help make a steep roof look smaller.

Roofing Colors & Energy Efficiency

The roofing color you pick can also help to make your home more energy efficient.

On average the color of your roof can affect the temperature of your attic by 20 to 40 degrees.  This can make a big change in your homes energy costs.  A lighter colored room will deflect the sun which will help to keep temperatures down in warmer climates.  This means less work for your air conditioner to keep your home cool in warmer months.  In colder climates, darker shingles will absorb the heat which will keep your home warmer.  This means darker shingles will also help melt snow and ice that accumulates on your roof.
